An average American middle class community is faced with a sudden and complete breakdown of the US economy, government, and society after a massive, nation-wide Islamic terrorist attack. Like the vast majority of Americans, none of the residents of Sea Breezes have a convenient bunker in the woods or a compound of survivalist friends to escape to. They have to find some way to organize themselves in order to survive with what they have on hand and what they can obtain by using their own wits and determination.

Retired Army Lieutenant Colonel Richard Cantrell and his brother-in-law, former Marine Gunnery Sergeant Josh Koenig, residents of the Florida community, volunteer to help, and what follows is the riveting and often heart-breaking account of a community coming to grips with the unthinkable.

Defending Sea Breezes is a complex story that weaves together international Islamic terrorism, US foreign policy failures, and the indomitable American spirit, to portray one of the most realistic and compelling "what if" stories of survival, all in one complete, stand-alone novel.

Unlike similar novels, this story gives a realistic, even probable, military and political background for the Collapse.

Advisories

If you believe that America's foreign policy over the last seven years has been correct, you will probably not enjoy this book.

Because this novel contains contemporary dialogue, it contains some profanity.

Special note from the author

I had been working on this novel for many months, and as I was preparing to publish it, the horrific events of the ISIS massacre in Paris occurred. Unfortunately, those attacks fit exactly into the story line of my novel, and the event was easily incorporated; in fact, I only modified one sentence to do so. It is disturbing but all too predictable in today's world when terrorism fiction becomes fact.

Defending Sea Breezes When the Collapse Comes What if Your Family Doesn't Have a Bunker in the Woods to Escape to? (Audible Audio Edition) Douglas Thornblom David Stifel Books

I really enjoyed reading this book. Doug did a great job developing the main character and telling the story from his point of view. I've read many series in this genre, but most of them follow some uber-prepper who has spent his life savings on beans and bullets. "Richard" on the other hand, simply had some supplies in the event of a natural disaster. This made sense considering where they lived, and the hurricanes to hit the Gulf Coast area over the past decade or so. The plot was believable, and unfortunately possible. It was a quick read, and difficult to put down. The only critique I have is the other characters weren't as developed as they could have been. We only learned cursory information about the other characters which left them feeling a little flat. Overall though, a fun read, thought provoking, and worth much more than the $0.99 price tag. I can't wait for Doug to put out his next title. I will definitely recommend this to everyone I know.

Review of Defending Sea Breezes When the Collapse comes, what if your family doesn’t have a bunker in the woods to escape to?

By Douglas Thornblom.

This is an excellent work by an accomplished writer. He has a well-organized approach, sets his characters’ background - a retired Air Force Lieutenant Colonel and a retired Marine Gunnery Sgt. – up nicely, logically. The two men and their families end up settling on a small Florida island hoping for eventual peace and quiet where they will be able to find careers that will enable them to supplement their military pensions.

The Iranians, Chinese and Russians have other ideas, not an invasion per se, but timed terrorist attacks, then wait until things get back to reasonably normal and then coordinated, much more devastating, destructive attacks, again by terrorists, which this time brings the nation to its knees.

When this happens all phases of government – federal, state and local - cease to function and after a period of time, anarchy takes over, since all branches of law enforcement, including the National Guard are more concerned with individual and family survival.

This is where the two protagonists’ prior military training comes to the fore – in spite of the local homeowners association’s president’s cowardly protestations.

They essentially took over the governance, the defense and administration of Sea Breezes as the situation rapidly worsened. Food, medical supplies became depleted, attacks from outside groups increased, as did wounds and deaths of residents.

As in other times of disaster, it would take months, even years for the nation to return to normal, but due to American resiliency it was on the way.

This is an excellent, imaginative, well written, suspenseful, intriguing, and highly recommended novel.

The reviewer, Thomas W. Leo, CPP, is a Graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point.
This book started out way too slowly, with way too much back story on the leading characters. Then it strayed deeply into the author's personal political diatribe at one point, which added absolutely nothing to the story. I also was not satisfied with a rather abrupt and inconclusive ending (Oh no, not another series! Why can't anyone tell a complete story in just one book anymore?) A good story was hiding in Sea Breezes -- just needed a major rewrite to bring it out. I really liked the premise and the execution...although more color would have helped, to make readers really feel like they were on a developed island in in Florida. This setting easily could have been changed to protecting an isolated frontier town in the old West, that is under siege from Indians or bad guys. If I had been the bad guys, I would have launched an attack by water, which never seemed to be considered in the book.
I read this in one sitting and I like that. There are many things to like about this book.
1-Plot was realistic and not contrived
2-Enough was said about the rest of the world and politics but not too much that it detracted from the main characters and their situation
3-Weapons and ammunition were talked about well enough that you could tell the author knew his subject, but they were not described ad nauseum
4-In most PA books, even the protagonist has some introspective moments agonizing over a kill or a decision not to kill. I hate it when the main character vomits after a kill or loses sleep over what happened. These guys did not. They were warriors. And they turned their pitifully prepared neighborhood into a fighting force.
5-I liked that there were not too many characters to remember. If I have to stress myself trying to remember who someone is, it turns into work and not pleasure.
6-The author did not jump from one set of characters to another, such as good guys, bad guys, politicians, captives, etc. That drives me crazy. He stayed with the one group of people except for the opening explanation of the Muslim plan to attack the US as seen through the eyes of their infiltrator who coordinated everything.
I hardly ever read a PA book that doesn't have the above annoying things in them, so I say Good Job and Thanks for an interesting read.
That said, I wish he had described Florida's weather. Nobody sweated a drop in the story despite having to dig graves and latrines. And although firewood was discussed, he never said how cold it got. Most PA books are set in the northern U.S. and I expect those northerners would have liked to hear about living conditions in the south. All coastal areas of Florida have sandy soil and growing a garden is nearly impossible without soil amendments....that is about the only unrealistic thing in the story. I would have picked up dozens of bags of topsoil, compost, and fertilizer at Home Depot while I was there.
